Speak Percussion creates world-class, risk-taking, and innovative projects with many of the world’s leading exponents of experimental and new music. In Australia, the group has performed at major venues and festivals including MONA FOMA (TAS), Tectonics – Adelaide Festival (SA), Totally Huge New Music Festival (WA), Performance Space (NSW), Brisbane Powerhouse (QLD), Judith Wright Centre (QLD), Canberra International Music Festival (ACT), Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (WA), OzAsia Festival (SA), and City Recital Hall (NSW).

Internationally, many of Speak’s major works have toured to leading festivals and venues such as Darmstadt (Germany), Transart Festival (Italy), Ruhrtriennale (Germany), Noorderzon Festival (Netherlands), MaerzMusik (Germany), SONICA (UK), Barbican (UK), Tage für Neue Musik (Zurich, Switzerland), TIPC (Taiwan), Salihara (Indonesia), CONNECT (Sweden), ARENA (Latvia), GAIDA (Lithuania), Batteries IV (Switzerland) and Café OTO (UK).

A cornerstone of Speak Percussion’s success is its commitment to long-term artistic relationships, allowing for deep creative development across multiple projects over several years:

  • With Fritz Hauser (Switzerland), Speak developed six major projects between 2004–2012, spanning chamber opera, installations, notated works, and spatial improvisations presented in Australia and Switzerland.

  • With Anthony Pateras, between 2004 and 2011 Speak commissioned works ranging from solo pieces to twelvetets, released multiple recordings, performed in the feature-length film Errors of the Human Body, and presented his work on four continents.

  • With Thomas Meadowcroft and James Rushford, Speak has commissioned and recorded multiple works, presenting them at prestigious events such as MaerzMusik (Berliner Festspiele), Adelaide Festival, and the Taiwan International Percussion Convention.

Doubling the Talent - Kaylie Melville appointed Co-Artistic Director

Speak Percussion has appointed Kaylie Melville as Co-Artistic Director alongside founding Artistic Director Eugene Ughetti, who will also serve as Artistic Director of the Canberra International Music Festival (2025–2028). This marks a milestone in the organisation’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of creative leaders while strengthening its collaborative artistic vision.

Welcoming Aaron Wyatt: Speak Percussion’s New Artist in Residence

Speak Percussion welcomes violist, composer, conductor, and digital innovator Aaron Wyatt as Artist in Residence, where he will create and perform a major new work and lead diverse artistic projects over the coming years. Wyatt, a pioneering First Nations conductor and developer of the Decibel ScorePlayer app, has performed internationally, directed acclaimed ensembles, and recently premiered Deborah Cheetham AO’s Nanyubak with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

Duré Dara OAM joins as Resident Creative Director

For over 50 years, Duré Dara OAM has been a pioneering improvisational musician, restaurateur, and women’s equity advocate, collaborating with leading Australian artists and receiving numerous honours, including the Order of Australia Medal. As Speak Percussion’s Resident Creative Director, she will perform, mentor, and lead new interdisciplinary projects, celebrating her legacy and inspiring future generations.

Post - COVID

After touring Atlas of the Sky to Sydney Festival in January 2020, like all Melbourne based arts organisations, the company was rocked by COVID_19 with consistent interruptions and cancellations of the majority of our projects till the middle of 2022.

In August 2022, we premiered the sublime Scream Star with three internationally based wunderkind composers creating three new innovative music works for screen and percussion: Jessie Marino, Johannes Kreidler and Matthew Shlomowitz.
